The years passed, and Dazai figured that the language of the phrase was convenient shorthand for something, because he's seen certain people shine and do a couple of things they were passionate about like they lived and breathed it. Also, certain people he surrounded himself with growing up with were actually worse than his decidedly uncharitable first impressions of them.
In a way, Bedivere steering him back to the age-old adage was kind of funny, and he couldn't help but crack a smile.]
